"A Word to The Wise About Paper and Pad Training"

Many people choose to paper train or pad train their pups. This is a good idea if you are gone for more hours than your puppy can be expected to hold it. You are providing an acceptable area for your puppy to eliminate when you are unavailable to take him outside.
However, if this isn't the case for you, then paper training your puppy or teaching him to use the puppy pads sold at many of the pet supply stores is simply postponing the inevitable, and may even increase the amount of time it takes to teach your puppy to go to the bathroom outside.
If you decide to use paper training until your puppy is old enough to hold his bladder and bowels, you can do it in the same way you teach him to go outside. Bring him to the newspaper at frequent intervals, and give him lots of praise and treats for using the appropriate spot to eliminate.
If you are able to provide fairly frequent outdoor potty breaks for your puppy, skip the paper altogether and concentrate on this. Paper training can only add to your puppy's confusion over where exactly it is appropriate to go.
